Hello all. One of the gifts I got for Christmas, is a printer/scanner/copier, and i'd like to get either OpenBook, or Kurtzweil, so that I can use my scanner to read print materials. I was wondering if any of you use either of these programs, or know someone who does, and which one seems to be better.
I'm certainly not an expert on either, though have used both. Kurzweil seems to be a litlte more flexible, both with available scanning options and file types, and seems to lock you in less of a blindy interface than its competitor does. it appears to have an issue with certain types of lexmark multi-purpose scanners however, producing errors which i haven't found solutions for.
The scanner that I have is made by Lexmark. So, does it seem that OpenBook works better with that type of scanner, instead of kurzweil?
I was kind of wondering the same thing. I have an hp model that does the same thing, and I've been trying to use an Openbook demo with it, and can't get it to do a damn thing.
It acts like it can't recognize my scanner.
I use K 2000 and it's great. The problem that you guys have found might be fixed in the newest version. K 1000 has the Neo Speech voices and I think that it has the daisy format.
having said this, i haven't had a chance to try kurzweil v10 yet, only v9. improvements may have been made as to the range of scanners supported. re: hp and openbook, no idea there.
i've both k1000 and open book. i prefer kurzeil more than open book cause i like the way it set and it have more funtion compare to open book. let us make this compare with something similar. jaws and window eyes. kurzeil as window eyes, and open book as jaws. its come with different application, and for a new user, and a jaws user, you might go for open book. cause, its easier compare to kkurzeil. but at the same time, if you are tired of robod voice, you will definitely go for kurzeil. cause kurzeil, you can choose for neo speach, either paul or Kid voice. i am not sure how its apply on the latest version of kurzeil, because i'm using v9.

I have used both and like them both about the same. I currently use openbook and I just got an hp scanner. Fs tells me they have not tested hp scanners but got it to work by playing around with the twain settings.

Kurzwill is really good, but, i haven't used open book.
I've used both, but I like Kurzweil better. Open Book I found to be a bit sluggish. Also, Kurzweil has really good tech support.
kerzwiel is great, but be careful with the types of scanner you have. it will only work with some scanners, though the selection to choose from is pretty vast. go to the kerzwiel website to find out the list of scanners, print them off, then take them to your local pc shop to purcahse the right scanner. I have a visioneir 9020 and that works fine. hth.
